Whether or not you’re new to California schools, there are a few things you should know about California GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) programs. First, you should know this:
California law places GATE programming under local control, which means that each district may have different standards for gifted program. It’s up to you! Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with these standards early in the process.
So what could these standards be? Well, they can vary from district to district as standards are under local scrutiny across the state, but here’s a good line:
Equal Opportunity: All students are tested for the GATE program regardless of gender, language, race, ethnicity , culture, or socio-economic background.
How often: Grades 3-5 students are tested once for GATE identification, usually in 3rd grade as formal grouping starts in 4th grade.
Older Students: Grade 6 and above students may also be referred for GATE identification through specific professional or academic judgment.
What are districts looking for to qualify for the GATE program?
Intellectually, they seek students who possess superior intellectual abilities. These pupils need and can benefit from particularly differentiated educational offers. This is determined by a skills assessment that measures a child’s learning potential.
If your student demonstrates academically superior ability in one or more specific academic areas, they will thrive beyond the norm in specially programmed educational services.
If the Your student excels in leadership, not only taking on leadership roles, but is also seen as a leader by his peers and teachers. They will be better prepared for a resume that will challenge them and give them the opportunity to hone their natural skills.
If your student is consistently working at a very advanced level in multiple academic fields and has been advised by an administrator, advisor, teacher, parent, student study group and / or GATE specialist, then that student is also in need of services.

2 . When and how often are students tested?
Even before kindergarten!
It can be an ongoing process as your child grows.
Best practices support ongoing and regular screening of students to determine if they are eligible to GATE services.
A student who does not meet the district’s eligibility criteria in a class may be admitted later.
If your child can be successful in advanced courses, they should be encouraged at all levels to do so in order to independently try from the fact that this is identified as gifted and talented.
3. What if we move from one area to another? Will my student be identified for GATE in the new district?
It depends … California law places GATE programming under local control. Therefore, each district can establish its own policies and guidelines regarding the identification and enrollment procedures for new students.
4. What should I do if I think my student is eligible for an accelerated program but has not been selected for the GATE at school program?
If the GATE program is under local control, you can contact the district GATE School coordinator to inquire why you are an unselected student and will follow an appeal procedure. The final decision rests with the district.
